Bring on the Ordinary: Post Your Mundane Requests Here

It’s been quiet around here, thanks to some gainful employment that fries my brain on a daily business. On the good side, I’ve been playing 1e fairly regularly and am helping wrangle submissions to this year’s Secret Santicore. I gotta hand it to Jez, Secret Santicore is a real crown jewel in the DIY/OSR community.

I did write one encounter for someone’s personal use (and thus didn’t blog it) and it was an unusual one for me in that there was no magic. Just the woods, an archer and a road. I purposely avoided anything fantastic as a key element of the encounter and I was quite pleased with the results.

Being one of Santicore’s helper elves also showed me where people’s minds are in terms of what they want from their D&D and I have to say this year will be pretty gonzo. With DCC and Carcosa coming out, I’m not surprised people are in a gonzo state of mind. I’m not immune–I read and want to play in DCC and appreciated Carcosa and I damn sure expect some top-notch stuff from the 2012 Santicore.

But then I’ve been playing 1e AD&D as a fighter with the New York Red Box crew. A dumb one–a pregen in a rules-as-written campaign using a Judges Guild module. And our magic user is reluctant to cast his spells, so in a lot of ways, there’s hardly any magic in this game. And I kind of like being a simple fighter.

And then I saw 13 Assassins. There has GOT to be some sort of kick-ass adventure there. And if this doesn’t make you want to break out Oriental Adventures or Legend of the Five Rings or Ruins and Ronin, you are a fool.

And then today I get my package from Sir Raggi, which had The God That Crawls and The Magnificent Joop Van Ooms, both of which are set on EARTH (thank you) and one in my favorite foreign city, Amsterdam. The God that Crawls scratches that shambling doom sort of itch, as its name should tell you. I expect I’ll give it a try. Joop does me a real solid with a wharf encounter table with only the tiniest bit of magic or the weird and more than 40 encounters that could really have happened in 1615 Amsterdam.

To make this short story long, I’m in the mood for the non-magical.  I don’t mind that most of the OSR is running solidly toward the gonzo, but I think I’m going to spend some time working out a table of brigand encounters and a dictionary of con games to run on your players. Low, low magic stuff that can be used every day and which should make your gonzo stuff stand out.

Keeping what I said above in mind, I’m going to take requests again. If you want some sort of material that is low or non-magic for your campaign, post something in the comments below. As I did last year with “Bring It”, I’ll get to it when I can, which might mean you’ll get it this year.

How is everyone doing, by the way?

Last Minute LotFP Bonus from Creeping Doom

July 31, 2012 11:53 pm / 1 Comment / Chris
Print Friendly Version of this pagePrint Get a PDF version of this webpagePDF

Anyone who sponsored grab bag or higher on any of the LotFP Summer adventures can contact me directly through twitter or this item and request one thing. A table (up to 20), a monster, a god/religion, encounter or monster. I’ll email something back to you directly and will not publish it unless you ask. It will be your secret thing to use in your game only.

This has NOTHING to do with James Raggi or LotFP. This is a side incentive. Don’t bug him about it.

Rules:

You must contact me before labor day, September 2, 2012. I need your email address, which campaign you funded and what name you used. If you were anonymous, I’d need to see your indiegogo recept (with privacy info removed).

You can request one thing only. Don’t give me a choice. If you want a specific monster, say “Please give me your idea of an owlbear” or whatever. It will be for LotFP, B/X, or Labyrinth Lord rules. Specify if applicable.

Don’t complain if you get it Christmas morning. My schedule is not my own.

There’s like 2 hours left.

Last Day for Flame Princess Hardcovers

Today is the last day for the LotFP crowdfunding drive. This is to fund publication of the player’s rules and the magic book as a single hardcover.

This is my favorite of the retroclones/remixes of the old school rules. And at $30, it’s possibly cheaper and definitely higher quality than what Kinko’s can make from a PDF.

I do hope that eventually Raggi will publish this and the referee book as hardcovers and keep them in print, but I know nothing of the economics of publishing.

Sorry to publish two nags in a row about this, but I want to make sure everyone who might enjoy this game gets the chance to get the hardcover.

I for one would not pass up the opportunity to have the Player’s Rules  /  Magic Book in a hardcover format. Nor should you. This is my favorite of the variations on the old rules.

It’d be good if my readers (both of you and you too, Mom) would sign up so we could get at least one bonus adventure out of it…

Kickstarters

This is a tiny blog, although perhaps not so much as I’d been assuming. You’ve all probably heard of these D&D related kickstarter projects, so consider this a nagging reminder. There are probably others that are worth your attention that I haven’t mentioned, so please feel free to post those in the comments.

The Adventurer Conquerer King Player’s Companion kickstarter ends tonight at 10PM EST. I’ve skimmed the pdf that was released late last year and will be playing it for the first time tomorrow going through Dwimmermount with Tavis.

I made my first delve into Dwimmermount last night with Paul Hughes, who writes blog of holding and has a kickstarter for his Random Dungeon Generator as Map.  This is one of those things I’m not entirely sure I need but backed solely on the fun I had last night at his gaming table (which was in the middle of a crowded art gallery).

Dwimmermount has its own kickstarter, of course, and I’ve signed on for that one. I hesitate to look at the extras and notes too much since I’ll be gaming in it a few more times I expect. What can I say? I’m a sucker for a good megadungeon (insert StoneHell nag here).

Lastly, is the indie-a-go-go campaign for The Monolith from Beyond Space and Time plus The God That Crawls. This one is not pacing well toward its goal, while the Kickstarter ones are. I don’t know if its the site or the way the perk levels are constructed, but I can’t imagine there being a lack of enthusiasm for LotFP material, especially adventure modules by Raggi Himself. Instead of positioning the campaign as the only way these will see the light of day, he presents the campaign as a way to help LotFP publish projects faster, so perhaps some portion of the OSR gang know he’ll publish this no matter what and are willing to wait. Now that he’s got McKinney’ stuff out the door, I am anxious to get him back to publishing his own work so I kicked in some sheckels.

Redheads

Am I the only one who wishes there was  writeup of the redhead fighter in the Lamentations of the Flame Princess Grindhouse box?

Also: Vornheim. Yes, please more. of. this. Whatever the graduate school equivalent of senioritis is, this put me off the deep end. Three more weeks until I can play and post regularly again.

Hopefully there will be more Vornheim-compatible table keys. I know I’ll be making some.

Ha ha look at Mister Smartass Creeping Doom using the alphabet meme. Shut up.

I just ordered the LotFP Grindhouse and the Vornheim Book from the Princess store. The PDF’s are coming down as I write this, but I am unlikely to get a chance to read them in depth for a week or more. I got the gardening society discount, but the shipping charges still gave me some sticker shock. I recommend getting together with friends and pre-ordering together if at all possible. I’m sure the rates reflect the costs fairly, I just mention it so you know ahead of time.

Any blogger out there looking for some search engine love should review them ASAP and get linked to from the LotFP blog. It’s been the number one search term to get to this site since August last year.

Also: Just got Fight On! number 11 last week. Lots of duck jokes this week, since it’s dedicated to Greg Stafford of RuneQuest fame.  On page 7 is a class writeup of the Sword Priests of Humakt that I like enough to work into my upcoming campaign and two solid adventures. I like this one but really loved issue 10, which included a huge barbarians and dinosaurs archipelago setting that I’d love to play in someday.

Dungeon Dogs: Ask and Ye Shall Receive

March 29, 2011 7:36 pm / 6 Comments / Chris
Print Friendly Version of this pagePrint Get a PDF version of this webpagePDF

Although I doubt it had anything to do with my post about dogs in the dungeon, Goblinoid Games recently released Dogs in the Dungeon, a four-page supplement to Labyrinth Lord that can easily be adapted to any of the OSR flavors of D&D. It is available at RPGNOW for a buck fitty or you can get an art-less free download. I recommend the art-free version, unless like me you want to toss a buck to Goblinoid.

Update: There is no free version of the Dogs in the Dungeon supplement. I misread Don’s post. It’s the Labyrinth Lord and Advanced Edition Companion rulesbooks that have art-free versions at no cost. Rolled a 1 on my reading check.

The four pages include breeds of:

  • Guard or Fighting Dog
  • Scenthounds
  • Sighthouds
  • Waterhounds
  • Exotic Hounds

To my uneducated eye, it seems Dan has researched historical breeds as much as would satisfy me as a DM. After the breeds are described, there are some rules for dogs such as:

Dominance

Dogs are pack animals, and as such they require a dominance structure to achieve harmony in a group. It is assumed that all of the dogs presented here are very well trained. They do not challenge the dominance of their masters. In any group where two or more dogs are present there will be struggles for dominance between the dogs. This will not occur during an encounter, due to the quality of their training, but the referee must roll 1d6 every four turns in the dungeon, or once per day in the wilderness. A roll of 1-2 on 1d6 indicates a dominance struggle, and the dogs get into a physical scuffle.

I’d be interested in hearing of anyone using these rules. I would have liked a few more exotic hounds (there are two), but I think the variety of mundane hounds is more than sufficient to add something to the game without breaking it.
