Anklebiter Art

June 1, 2012 11:13 am / Leave a Comment / Chris

So Zak wanted us to get the kids’ take on displacer beasts and other monsters. I gave my in-house comic book artist a little bit of art direction and asked for a battle between displacer beasts and their mortal enemy, the blink dogs. I showed him the 1e and 3e monster manual illustrations for both. He though the 1e was better, but he also loves cats.

The idea of having the wise blink dogs attacking an empty space was mine, but he decided there should be an outline of the displacer beasts.

Displacers vs. Blinks.

Misconceptions About Armor and NY’s Metropolitan Museum

September 15, 2010 7:15 pm / 1 Comment / Chris

New York’s Metropolitan Museum has a wonderful collection of arms and armor. As part of their Timeline of Art History, they have posted a list of common misconceptions about medieval armor, swords and knightly life. Being lucky enough to have easy access to the museum, I have found it a constant source of inspiration for gaming and other projects.

King Henry VIII's Armor

No respect. Henry VIII's armor at the Met

The Timeline’s Medieval Art section is an obvious place for gamers to look, but there are essays on other civilizations straight out of the Deities & Demigods book.

As I pick up posting again tomorrow, I’ll include some ideas inspired by the images on this site.

Awesome Holy Symbol at the Met

August 20, 2010 11:04 pm / 1 Comment / Chris

This copper-alloy example represents a male figure dressed in a short kilt and mountain boots with upturned toes. If his horned headdress is similar in meaning to examples found in Mesopotamia and Iran, the figure may be divine. The arrow-shaped forms emerging from his shoulders and under his arm may represent snakes or lightning bolts.
